Why IITs are becoming IIMs in India

Introduction :

Recently I have made a blog on ‘Top 10 Management Colleges in India in 2023‘. If you have read it, then you have probably noticed that there are two IITs (IIT Delhi & IIT Bombay). But how? These two are among one of the most prestigious engineering colleges right and when we discuss about top management colleges then we mostly think about IIMs and these two colleges have even beaten IIMs in the country. So, let’s start and discuss how it started and how these engineering colleges are producing entrepreneurs in managerial fields by beating top IIMs from directly through their college campus.

Journey Of IIT Delhi :

Establishment & Journey :

Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi commonly known as IIT Delhi is one of the top engineering colleges in India and famous for it’s top class teaching, rich alumni network and outstanding placement. It is first established 62 years ago in 1961. From it’s established date till today, It came a very long way and proved itself among top 10 engineering colleges in India. It is one of the among 23 other IITs created to be Centers of Excellence for India’s training, research and development in the field of science, engineering and technology.

IIT Delhi provides it’s excellency in Management field through IIT DMS means Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi Department of Management Studies. It all started back in 1963 with a floating idea and that idea then gives a base to IIT DMS. Through it’s long journey in the field of management, IIT DMS has proved itself by becoming one of the top 10 B-Schools in India in 2023 (According to NIRF Ranking 2023).

The Institute of Technology, Bombay commonly known as IIT Bombay is a public research university & technology institute located in Powai, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was first found in 1958. From that year till today, it has come a long way. It is one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in India.

But beside this, It is also providing it’s excellent education in Management through SJMSOM (Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management. It was first founded by IIT Bombay in the year of 1995 with an objective of transforming professionals into future leaders.

Why IITs are becoming IIMs in India?

You see, above I have discussed about IITs which have a specific institution for Management studies and they are also ranking in NIRF Ranking among ‘Top 10 Management Colleges in India’. But the thing is Why IITs are becoming IIMs in India, because they are technical institutes and doing great in their field. Today not only in India but also in the world, IIT already became a brand name then why they are entering in Managerial field and directly competing with top IIMs in India.

IITs are among top technology colleges in India. Beside this, currently some of the IITs are also offering managerial programmes. IITs mainly offers engineering degrees and as they stay updated latest technologies, so they know the current market trends and they know what are the skills a company needs and expect from the student and if you have seen the Dona chart above, then you have probably noticed that a big percentage of IIMs students is from Engineering background or having IIT degrees. So, they also provides managerial programmes to give the students a chance to get management degrees from the top known IITs.

How IITs are replacing IIMs in India?

If you see fees structure of IIMs and IITs for managerial programmes, then you will notice a big difference in it. Here I will explain fees structure difference between above two IITs and top IIMs for Master in Business Administration Programme or MBA.

FEES STRUCTURE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN IITs &IIMs –

According to some datas collected from Internet, for a 2 year PGP/MBA Programme, IIM Ahmedabad charges around Rs. 23.00 lakhs, IIM Bangalore charges around Rs. 24,50,000 and IIM Calcutta costs around Rs. 23.00 lakhs where IIT Delhi, DMS costs around Rs. 11.20 lakhs and Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay charges around Rs. 10 lakhs.

Placement –
