An unusual incident occurred in Bihar’s Jamui district where 13 teachers had their salary withheld for absenteeism from the education department for “bed performance”, the formal letter which should have said “bad performance”. The mistake led to protests from teachers’ unions, The Times of India reported.
The disturbing incident occurred on May 22 when education officials conducted surprise raids on several schools in Bihar’s Jamui district. During this inspection, they found that many teachers were absent and many were not working properly. Discipline must be taken.
However, the misuse of the word “bad performance” immediately attracted media attention after it get shared on social media and became the focus of the department rather than the teachers. After the letter circulated online, the DEO’s office issued an explanation. They explained the inaccuracy as a typographical error and acknowledged that the intended term was “bad performance.”
The letter details the disciplinary punishment imposed on all 16 teachers. Of these, 3 teachers were penalized for absenteeism, and 13 teachers had their salaries cut due to poor performance.
